President Michelle Curtain Stewart announced today that she has named Dr. Andrew Safyer as the new academic dean at the Institute for Clinical Social Work (ICSW). Dr. Safyer will assume the position on July 1, 2021. Dr. Stewart stated, “Dr. Safyer brings to the Institute for Clinical Social Work over three decades of experiences in higher education as an administrator, an active researcher and in clinical practice. The search committee was impressed by his demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion, supporting student success, and his psychodynamic background. I am looking forward to working with Dr. Safyer in continuing to advance our mission and strengthening our commitment to psychodynamic graduate studies.” As the academic dean, Dr. Safyer will provide academic leadership, working in collaboration with the faculty, ensuring quality of instruction and learning across all programs. Dr. Safyer will also lead in expanding community and organizational partnerships that support the Institute for Clinical Social Work’s mission and help to increase awareness about psychodynamic graduate studies. Dr. Safyer has a long and distinguished career devoted to research and academics as well as clinical practice and supervision. A graduate of the joint Ph.D. program in social work and psychology at University of Michigan, he also earned an MSW and master’s in psychology there.
Additionally, he has received extensive psychodynamic training at both the University of Michigan and the Harvard Hospital System. Dr. Safyer has held faculty and deanship positions at major universities including Boston University, the University at Buffalo and Adelphi University. At present, he maintains a part-time clinical practice specializing in working with couples, adults and older adolescents dealing with trauma, and substance abuse and relationship issues. He is currently licensed as a clinical social worker in Massachusetts, New York, Illinois and Minnesota and continues to serve as the co-convener of the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision now in its 15th year.
Dr. Safyer stated, “the appointment to academic dean at ICSW aligns well with my vision for providing students with a quality education that includes solid training in psychodynamic practice with a commitment to social justice.”
