Laura Selby was a dedicated member of the Board of Trustees at ICSW between 2005-2019. She served as treasurer for several years and then became board chair, a position she held for three years. While Laura led the school through some major transitions, she simultaneously served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer for Hispanic Housing Development Corporation (HHDC) and the chief financial officer for HHDC and Tropic Construction Corporation. She joined HHDC in 1991 as CFO and since then has overseen financial operations, accounting, human resources, and information technology. She also created a fully operational human resource department that serves over 200 employees. We are grateful to Laura for bringing her extensive knowledge to ICSW. Laura’s enormous energy and commitment to giving of herself resulted in her becoming president for the 325 N. Wells Commercial Condo Association, as well as treasurer for Central States SER and for SER Metro Detroit, an organization that helps marginalized and disadvantaged residents from across the city of Chicago and suburban Cook County to achieve their career and academic goals through quality employment, education and training programs. She is a mentor sponsor for The Center for Nonprofit Success and for the last few years she has been a speaker for the Local Initiatives Support Corporation’s (LISC) financial managers’ conference. She was voted a LISC CFO All-Star. ICSW is proud to give the award for Distinguished Service to Laura Selby.
Peter Shaft began his professional career in Denver, 1971, as a therapist at Jewish Family and Children Service, working intensively with children individually and in groups at the Jewish Community Center of Denver. Subsequently, Peter became a staff member at the University of Colorado, Out-Patient Child Psychiatry Clinic where he was involved in training psychiatry, psychology and social work students. Peter, his wife Donna and their children moved to Chicago in 1983, when Peter began studying in the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy training program (CAPT) at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and working at the Fillmore Mental Health Center in Berwyn. He was appointed to the ICSW faculty during the Institute’s beginning phases and has served as chair of Continuing Education, a member and chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee, faculty representative to the Board of Directors, and a member of a search committee. Peter even taught a croissant making class as part of fundraising for an ICSW Benefit. In 2009 he enrolled in Washington Center for Psychoanalysis’s New Directions in Psychoanalytic Writing program, which he completed in 2012. Currently he maintains a consultation and psychotherapy practice in Oak Park and Chicago and is completing the psychoanalytic training program at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. By far, says Peter Shaft, his most rewarding professional experience has been as consultant to child evaluations and treatment cases and in leading ICSW child case conferences. ICSW is happy to present Peter Shaft with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his extraordinary contributions to our students and the psychoanalytic field.
