From "outside in" to "inside out": A new, psychodynamic framework for thinking about gender.
Presentation:
Gender is typically thought of as something assigned to an individual by others. From our earliest moments, humans are taught to assign gender to others based on external markers. To improve competency in working with gender diverse individuals, social workers need a new framework for understanding gender. Derived from the presenter’s psychodynamic research into the experiences of trans gestational parents, this presentation proposes understanding gender as an intensely subjective experience. By understanding gender as an expression of the interiority and meaning- making of the gendered subject--an expression seeking responsive attunement and relational recognition--we are better positioned to expansively work with our patients' gendered experiences.
This presentation will make extensive use of case material from the presenter's research to illustrate and elaborate these ideas.
